What Angus EPDs Mean and How to Read Them Correctly

An EPD predicts the average difference between one bull’s future calves and another bull’s. That is the whole idea in one sentence. But the number is only half the story. Accuracy, honest reporting, and everything an EPD cannot show you decide whether a good-looking figure holds up in the pasture. This guide covers what each part means and how to read the whole picture, the way a careful buyer should.

What is an EPD?

An EPD, or Expected Progeny Difference, predicts how a bull’s calves will perform on average compared to another bull’s calves, when both are bred to similar cows. If Bull A has a weaning weight EPD of +80 and Bull B sits at +62, Bull A’s calves should average about 18 pounds heavier at weaning. That 18-pound spread holds whether you wean 500-pound calves or 700-pound calves. The environment sets the baseline, and the EPD predicts the genetic difference on top of it.

The one thing almost everyone gets wrong: a +80 weaning weight EPD does not mean an 80-pound calf. It means that bull’s genetic transmitting ability sits 80 pounds above the breed’s base population. EPDs only mean something when you compare two animals. A single number in isolation tells you nothing.

One more limit. EPDs only compare animals within the same breed. An Angus +50 is not a Hereford +50, because each breed runs its own evaluation against its own base.

Start with your goals and your environment

Before you read a single number, know what your program is building and what your country will support. An EPD is neutral. Whether a high value helps depends entirely on your operation.

Maternal milk is the clearest case. High milk raises weaning weights where there is feed to back it. On a dry forage base, those same cows milk off their condition, fail to breed back, and cost more than the extra pounds return. The number did not change. Your environment decided whether it helped or hurt.

Set the goal first, and the traits that matter sort themselves out. A terminal program retaining ownership through the feedlot wants growth and marbling. A maternal program keeping its own replacements wants moderation, fertility, and cows that last. For our country in the Great Basin, that means fleshing ability, moderate mature size, and PAP come before growth for its own sake. It is the thinking behind our genetics program.

Which direction is good for each trait?

For most growth and carcass traits, higher is better. For a handful of traits, lower is the goal. This table sorts the common ones at a glance:

Calving ease is the exception among the good-news traits: higher CED means more unassisted births, which is why it sits with the “higher” group even though it is about avoiding trouble.

If you run cattle at altitude, PAP is not optional. High PAP scores point to right-side heart failure above about 5,500 feet, and no growth number makes up for a dead cow.

How percentile rankings work

A percentile tells you where a bull stands against the breed. Top 10% for marbling means his marbling EPD beats 90% of the comparison group. Lower percentile numbers are better: top 1% is elite, 99th is the bottom.

Percentiles are more useful than raw numbers for a quick read, because they adjust for genetic trend. The breed keeps improving, so a weaning weight that ranked top 10% a decade ago might sit at breed average today.

Here is the part most buyers miss. Chasing top 1% on every trait builds extreme, unbalanced cattle. A bull in the top 30 to 40% across several important traits will almost always outproduce and outlast one that is top 1% for yearling weight and bottom half for everything else. Balance beats extremes.

Accuracy, or how much to trust the number

Every EPD carries an accuracy value from 0.05 to 0.99. Accuracy is not genetic merit. It measures how much information backs the prediction. A young bull at 0.20 accuracy is not worse than a proven sire at 0.90. We just know less about him.

That gap matters. The association publishes a possible change figure that shows how far an EPD might move as data comes in. A +70 weaning weight at 0.20 accuracy can swing roughly 9 pounds in either direction. The same +70 at 0.80 accuracy moves maybe 2 pounds. So two young bulls a few points apart at low accuracy are not reliably different. The spread on paper is inside the margin of error.

Genomic testing has narrowed this a lot. A genomic-tested young bull with no calves now carries accuracy roughly equal to having 25 or so progeny on the ground. That makes young bulls far more usable than they were a generation ago. Their numbers will still shift more than a proven sire’s.

The working rule: EPDs tell you which bull to use, accuracy tells you how heavily to use him. Lean on high-accuracy sires across the whole herd. Use a promising young bull on a smaller group where a shift in his numbers will not hurt you. For high-stakes matings, such as heifers on range where a hard calving means a dead cow, lean toward proven accuracy.

The numbers are only as good as the reporting

Here is the part the glossy catalogs skip. The entire EPD system runs on data that breeders send back to the association. Whole-herd reporting, clean contemporary groups, weights taken on every calf and not just the good ones. When an operation reports selectively, turning in only the calves that make the herd look good, the numbers drift upward and stop meaning what they should.

You cannot see reporting quality in an EPD. But you can ask. A breeder who reports everything, whole contemporary groups included, is standing behind numbers you can trust. That question tells you as much as any figure in the catalog.

Going upstream, what an EPD cannot show you

An EPD is a prediction built from data. It is not a substitute for looking at the cattle. Before you buy on a number, go upstream:

  • The dam. Her real production, how she breeds back, how she holds condition, how many calves she has raised
  • The sire. His proven progeny on the ground, not just his own paper
  • Full and half sibs. Animals you can lay eyes on and evaluate directly
  • Cow-family consistency. Does the family throw the same kind of cattle year after year, or is this animal an outlier
  • Structure and phenotype. Feet, legs, capacity, disposition, the things a number will never capture

A strong EPD on an animal from a consistent, honestly reported cow family is worth far more than the same number standing alone. That is the standard behind the Angus genetics we offer.

A practical way to work through selection

Work in this order, not the reverse. Most buyers start at economics and back into everything else. Start instead with the gates that keep you out of trouble:

  1. Soundness first. Feet, legs, structure, and a passing breeding soundness exam. A bull that breaks down does not sire anything.
  2. Environmental fit second. PAP for elevation, fleshing ability and moderate mature size for a forage base like ours. A bull that cannot hold condition on your country is the wrong bull at any price.
  3. Economic genetics third. Now bring in the $Value indexes, $C for balanced commercial herds and $M for maternal focus, to sort the animals that cleared the first two gates.

The indexes do real work. They balance a dozen or more traits by economic weight so you are not juggling every number by hand. But they run behind on PAP and fleshing ability, the traits that matter most in high country. That is why they come third, after you have already screened for fit.

Common questions

Does a higher EPD always mean a better bull?

No. A higher EPD means a higher prediction for that one trait. It says nothing about accuracy, structure, or fit for your environment. A balanced bull with solid numbers usually beats a single-trait standout.

What is a good accuracy for a young bull?

Young genomic-tested bulls often sit in the 0.20 to 0.40 range, and that is normal. Treat their numbers as a solid estimate, not a settled fact, and use them where a shift will not cost you much.

Can you compare Angus and Hereford EPDs directly?

No. Each breed evaluates against its own base. Comparing across breeds needs USDA adjustment factors.

What is the difference between an EPD and a percentile?

The EPD is the raw prediction. The percentile is where that prediction ranks against the breed. Percentiles are easier for a fast read because they adjust for genetic trend.

How often do EPDs change?

Weekly. Always pull current numbers before you buy. The value on an old sale sheet may not match today.
